Spadina’s late-night Chiu Chow kitchen, unchanged and unbothered
Swatow is the Spadina restaurant every list forgets and every local uses. Chiu Chow cooking, done at speed, at prices that feel like an error, until two in the morning.
Beef ho fun is the test — the noodles should be smoky and dry rather than slick, and here they are. Fish congee is the other reason to come, silky and restorative and cheap enough to be an afterthought. Salt-and-pepper squid lands on every second table and should land on yours.
Honest notes: service is brisk to the point of brusque, the room is strictly functional, and the till prefers cash. That is the deal, and it has been the deal for thirty years.
The wok test, and this wok passes. Smoky, not greasy.
Silky, restorative, and about the price of a coffee.
Ordered by every second table for a reason.
Beef ho fun, fish congee, squid. Late, cheap, and better than it looks.
