The review

Brunch in Toronto is mostly an exercise in queueing for something you could make. The Federal is the exception because it does the unglamorous work — curing its own bacon, sourcing its own eggs, baking to order — and then serves it in a room with twenty seats.

The breakfast sandwich is the reason to come: house bacon, a properly cooked egg, and a bun that survives to the last bite. The full breakfast is the move if you skipped dinner. Pancakes are for sharing, not for one.

Honest notes: twenty seats, no bookings, and a weekend queue that starts before opening. It closes mid-afternoon. Go on a Wednesday and it is one of the calmest rooms in the city.

What to order

Must order

The Federal Breakfast Sandwich

House bacon, egg, cheese, on a bun that holds. The order.

Must order

Full Breakfast

House-cured everything. The correct move if you skipped dinner.

Buttermilk Pancakes

For the table, not for one person.

What works

  • Cures its own bacon and it shows
  • Small enough to stay consistent
  • Coffee is taken seriously

What doesn’t

  • Twenty seats and no bookings
  • Closes mid-afternoon
  • Weekend queue is long
Verdict

The breakfast sandwich, midweek. Weekends mean an hour on the pavement.
