The review

Sunny's takes the dishes Chinese-Canadian takeout has been quietly serving for fifty years and cooks them like they matter, which turns out to be all they ever needed. Nothing here is a deconstruction; it is just better.

Crispy chilli beef is the obvious start and the correct one — crisp, sticky, and hot in a way the takeout version never is. Mapo tofu is numbing rather than merely spicy, which is the entire difference between the dish being good and being nothing. Salt-and-pepper squid rounds it out.

Honest notes: the room is small, so book. The music is loud and that is not an accident. It is closed at the top of the week. Go with three people and order across the menu.

What works

  • Familiar dishes cooked with real skill
  • Small enough to feel personal
  • Drinks list is genuinely fun

What doesn’t

  • Tiny room, so booking matters
  • Loud music, by choice
  • Closed at the start of the week
Verdict

Chilli beef, mapo, squid, three people. Book — it is a small room.
