The review

A chip shop is a simple proposition and therefore a hard one: there is nowhere to hide. Kingsway Fish & Chips has been getting it right long enough that the Bloor West crowd treats it as infrastructure rather than a restaurant.

Haddock is the order — a properly light batter that shatters instead of bending, and fish underneath that is still steaming. Halibut is available for noticeably more money and is genuinely better, firmer and sweeter, but the haddock is the smarter buy. Chips are thick-cut and fried well. The coleslaw is sharp rather than creamy, which is exactly what all that batter needs.

Honest notes: the room is functional, the hours are short, and everything closes early. This is a place you take home.

What to order

Must order

Haddock & Chips

The default and the best-value order. Batter shatters, fish steams.

Halibut & Chips

Costs more, worth it once. Firmer, sweeter, cleaner.

Homemade Coleslaw

Sharp rather than creamy — which is the point beside all that batter.

vegetarian

What works

  • Fried to order, never held
  • Consistent across years
  • Takeout travels well

What doesn’t

  • Room is functional at best
  • Halibut is a real jump in price
  • Closes early
Verdict

Haddock, chips, coleslaw, extra vinegar. Take it home and eat it immediately.
