The review

Bonjour Brioche opened in 1996 and has spent thirty years declining to change, which in a neighbourhood that has changed completely is close to a public service. It is a bakery with a café attached, and both halves work.

The quiche of the day is the order — deep, properly set, on pastry that has been made rather than bought. The brioche is the namesake and worth taking home. A croque monsieur settles lunch without further discussion.

Honest notes: the weekend queue is long, there are no reservations, and it closes mid-afternoon. On a Wednesday at 9am it is one of the most pleasant rooms in the east end.

What to order

Must order

Quiche of the Day

Deep, set properly, with actual pastry underneath. The order.

Must order

Brioche

The house namesake. Buy one for now and one for tomorrow.

vegetarian

Croque Monsieur

Béchamel, ham, too much cheese. Lunch, settled.

What works

  • Three decades of consistency
  • Pastry counter is worth the trip alone
  • Genuinely calm on a weekday morning

What doesn’t

  • Weekend brunch queue is long
  • No reservations
  • Closes mid-afternoon
Verdict

Quiche and a brioche to take away, on a weekday morning.
