The review

Sunrise House is not a restaurant you choose so much as one you end up in, usually at an hour when nothing else is open. That it is also genuinely good is a fortunate accident of North York.

Sundubu jjigae is the order — soft tofu stew arriving still bubbling, hot enough to hurt. Haejangguk is the hangover soup and does exactly what it claims. Bibimbap in the stone bowl, so the rice at the edge crisps.

Honest notes: the room is worn, the service varies wildly with the hour, and nothing here is refined. It is open twenty-four hours and costs almost nothing, which at 4am is a complete argument.

What to order

Must order

Sundubu Jjigae

Soft tofu stew, bubbling on arrival. The 3am order.

spicy
Must order

Haejangguk

Hangover soup, and it does what the name says.

Bibimbap

In the stone bowl, so the rice crisps. Order it that way.

What works

  • Open around the clock
  • Very cheap for the portion

What doesn’t

  • Room is worn
  • Service depends heavily on the hour

Verdict

Sundubu jjigae at whatever hour you arrive. Cheap, hot, always open.
